AND THE BEST STUDENTS WANT TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY

Jan 29, 2022

The Association of Doctoral Students and Young Researchers of Serbia, which includes students from state and private universities in Serbia, abbreviated as Doctoral Students of Serbia (www.doktoranti.org.rs), conducted a survey on the situation in doctoral studies in Serbia in 2014. years.

Serbian doctoral students conducted the survey every year, starting in 2010. and for some answers a comparative presentation of results by year is given.

The survey provides a very comprehensive overview of the problems that students have in doctoral studies. What is most frightening are the answers to the questions whether there is a perspective for young scientists in Serbia, whether they plan to leave Serbia and why, whether they think that they can easily get a job after finishing their studies. Results
these responses are very devastating. More than 80% of doctoral students believe that there are no prospects in Serbia, and as a result, more doctoral students who plan to leave Serbia than those who want to
stay. More than 60% of respondents do not have a job and find it difficult to find one.

If you look realistically at the current situation on the labor market in Serbia, today, in addition to state universities and institutes, doctors of science work in significant numbers only at private universities and faculties, and that market is already saturated. Insight into the results of the survey filled out by current doctoral students, it can be concluded that they are fully aware of the current situation in the Republic of Serbia. Unfortunately, all of the above, combined with growing nepotism, corruption and negative selection, will put Serbia back at the top of the world in terms of brain drain, we are currently 141st out of 144 countries analyzed in the World Competitiveness Index.
