In cooperation with the Rotary Club Belgrade – Skadralija and Dragon Boat Club Ada Dragons, the action ‘Row and win!’ Was held.
As part of this event, in addition to rowing in dragon boat boats, a health forum dedicated to breast cancer was organized, where doctors specializing in public health, gynecology and oncology surgery spoke, and a presentation of the association “Let’s be together” was organized.
The topics of the forums were:
1. “Breast cancer – public health problem”
2. “Breast cancer – clinical aspect”
3. “Breast cancer – surgical aspect”
4. “Effect of Dragon Boat Rowing on Reducing Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Treatment”
The Association of Women Suffering from and Treated for Breast Cancer “Let’s Be Together” was founded in December 2010. as a voluntary, humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organization that brings together patients with and treated for breast cancer, members of their families, friends and other stakeholders. The goal of the association is to provide information and psychological support to women suffering from and treated for breast cancer, in order to return to normal life as soon as possible, as well as their families. The association works on the prevention of breast cancer and educating the female population about the need for preventive and regular examinations.
Back in 1996. Canadian doctor Don McKenzie began research on the impact of Dragon Boat on the postoperative recovery of women who have survived breast cancer. He disputed the opinion that exercises of the upper extremities should be avoided in order to prevent complications after the operation (like lymphedema of the hand that occurs after the removal of the lymph nodes in the armpits).
A sense of support, harmony and togetherness during Dragon Boat rowing encourages women to lead a fulfilled and active life after breast cancer. Dragon Boat is an ideal sport for promoting health and raising awareness about breast cancer in the entire population (as well as the importance of prevention through regular check-ups).
Breast cancer survivors dragon boating is an international movement inspired by the research of Canadian sports medicine expert Dr. Don McKenzie. Breast cancer survivors have teamed up to paddle in dragon boats, for the benefit of their physical health and social well-being.
The movement is supported by the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission (IBCPC).
We thank everyone who supported the action and look forward to the first ‘Breast Cancer Survivors’ team from Serbia soon! ?
